Faith Popcorn’s BrainReserve

BrainReserve commissioned Tesauro for a contribution to their 2018 zine exploring ideas of about where masculinity is heading, how it will impact creativity, and how men will participate in our society anew, personally and professionally.

In response, a provocative decree to men and wordplay for all that wends from 50,000 years ago to 5,000,000 years from now. All-caps phrases throughout are angagrams of FUTURE OF MASCULINITY.

Calendargrams

For years, as little gifts to friends, Tesauro made personal ‘Nameagrams,’ a select series of anagrams introduced with the line: ‘Wanna know someone better? Simply rearrange their letters.’

What exactly is an anagram? Anagrammatically-speaking, ‘astronomer’ becomes ‘moon starer.’ Jason Tesauro scrambled = ‘So, a rosé jaunt.’

Beginning late February 2025, he spelled-out each date – February twenty-second, for instance – and mined the letters for interesting anagrams. In some cases, there are literally tens of thousands of possible combinations. For others, only a few exist. He whittles down the panoply of choices by identifying interesting words to craft a series of phrases or even a semi-coherent poem of sorts. Then, he slaps ‘em on postcards and sends it out.

Back in the nineties, Tesauro paid his rent hustling backgammon in Washington, DC. When he lived in Atlanta, GA, he reimagined the game as a functional art object and crafted from exotic hardwoods an elliptical board with triangular pieces cut from Italian marble. He received a US Design Patent and then bartered with Master Tailor Gentleman Jim to trade a backgammon board for his first bespoke tuxedo.
